While elections are due in Indian-administered Kashmir, a relative difference is taking shape among the populace. Most of the Kashmiris view the forthcoming elections as an opportunity to frustrate Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from gaining total control of the region, after years of poor voter engagement. In the previous elections, more Kashmiri masses remained non-voters as a means of silencing the opposition, however, after the abrogation of Article 370 of the Indian constitution in 2019 the political will has returned and most Kashmiris are prepared to vote.
The Impacts of Article 370 Removal
The lifting of Article 370, which was about the inner state integration of Jammu and Kashmir, was the critical event of this region’s contemporary chronicle. Modi’s regime took away Kashmir’s special status, resulting in uprisings, dissatisfaction, and even betrayal among Kashmiris. The BJP’s strategy of expanding self-rule has found favor with some of the concerned voters who do not agree with the BJP’s stance towards them and view the election as a chance to restore some political power.
A Growing Political Awakening
Political writers and experts in the area have considered an increasing amount of Kashmiris who are interested in engaging within the political structure. This shift comes from a broader understanding that abstaining from voting has helped the BJP establish footholds in local politics. Through the non-participation in the previous elections, many Kashmiris believe they did not intentionally foster grounds for the overwhelming influence of the BJP in the Area.
This time around, the narrative is however different. Casting a vote is framed as an act of defiance and the need to create a voting coalition capable of undermining BJP’s dominance is clamored for. Citizens have been successfully organized by using social media and local leaders with calls to action to safeguard the political and cultural integrity of Kashmir by exercising their vote for example. Voter participation in elections has once again become the talk of the town.
Challenges Ahead
